The Signal
Stripe’s annual developer conference Sessions 2026 sent a clear signal: AI Agents are no longer just writing code and chatting—they are about to become participants in the economy.
Stripe co-founder Patrick Collison summarized four key judgments in his keynote:
- The entire economy is “replatforming”—from human-driven transaction systems to Agent-driven ones
- Agents will soon handle most transactions—not “assist,” but “handle”
- AI makes “developer-first” more important than ever—Agents’ hunger for good DX far exceeds human developers’
- Launch of Link AI Wallet—providing Agents with payment identity and fund management capabilities
This is not another hollow “AI changes the world” prediction. Stripe is one of the world’s largest online payment infrastructures, processing trillions of dollars in transactions. When its founder says “Agents will handle most transactions,” it means:
Your business model must be ready for Agent customers, not just human ones.
What Is the Agent Economy
Current e-commerce and SaaS assume: the initiator, decision-maker, and executor of a transaction are all human. The Agent economy breaks this assumption:
| Traditional Transaction | Agent Economy Transaction |
|---|---|
| Human browses → selects → orders → pays | Agent monitors → decides → negotiates → executes |
| Credit card/Alipay bound to a person | Digital wallet bound to Agent identity |
| Fixed prices, bulk discounts | Agent real-time negotiation, dynamic pricing |
| Returns: human initiates process | Agent auto-detects anomalies → triggers return |
Stripe’s Link AI Wallet is essentially a “digital bank account” designed for AI Agents—it has its own identity, credit limit, transaction history, and fund management capabilities, independent of its human owner.
Same Day, OKX Releases Agent Payments Protocol (APP)
Coincidentally (or inevitably), on the same day as Stripe Sessions, OKX released Agent Payments Protocol (APP), providing AI Agents with a complete “wallet + contract” system.
OKX’s APP solves problems beyond Stripe’s solution:
- Negotiation capability: Agents don’t just pay—they negotiate prices and delivery terms
- Delivery guarantee: Smart contract-like escrow mechanism ensuring payment after delivery
- Dispute resolution: Agent-level dispute resolution process without human intervention
What This Means
For Developers
If your product has an API, Agents will be your next major customer group. Patrick Collison put it bluntly: “Agents’ hunger for good DX far exceeds human developers.”
This means:
- API documentation needs to be Agent-readable (not just human-readable)
- Pricing models need to account for Agent high-frequency, low-volume call scenarios
- Authentication and authorization need to support Agent identities (not just OAuth human login)
For Businesses
In the next 1-3 years, some of your customers will be AI Agents, not humans. These Agents will:
- Automatically compare prices and services
- Make autonomous decisions based on preset strategies
- Trade 24/7 without interruption
If your system doesn’t support Agent access, you are losing future market share.
For Individuals
Your future “digital assistant” won’t just help you write emails—it will buy things for you, subscribe to services, negotiate prices, and process refunds. What you need to do is set budgets and preferences, then let it execute.
Timeline Judgment
| Phase | Estimated Time | Marker |
|---|---|---|
| Agent-assisted payment | Now | Agent helps human choose, human confirms |
| Agent autonomous payment (small) | 2026 H2 | <$100 transactions completed autonomously |
| Agent autonomous payment (medium) | 2027 | <$1000, requires human-set limits |
| Agent negotiation + payment | 2027-2028 | Agent-to-agent price negotiation becomes normal |
| Agent economy mainstream | 2029+ | Most online transactions initiated by Agents |
Action Items
- Immediately: Check if your APIs support Agent-level authentication and calls
- This month: Evaluate whether your pricing model fits Agent high-frequency call scenarios
- This quarter: Experimentally provide Agent access plans for your core services
- Ongoing: Follow Stripe Link AI Wallet and OKX APP ecosystem progress
The Agent economy is not “the future”—it starts today. These two products released by Stripe and OKX on the same day are infrastructure-level signal flares.
